Saturday, April 22, 2017 – “The Big Swing Thing”

A Tribute to the Golden Age of Big Bands – Valencia Ballroom  – 142 N George St, York, PA

9:00 a.m. to 11:50 p.m.; $50 pp; Description: It’s Swing Time again in York, Pennsylvania, and we’re bringing it back with style. After being closed for several years, York’s historic Valencia Ballroom has reopened under new management. One of just a half dozen grand ballrooms from the big band era, the Valencia looks marvelous. Everything is being cleaned, shined, polished, and restored to its original art deco grandeur. Many planned upgrades are in the works already or planned for the spring. With its fully spring loaded, 4000 foot dance floor, the ballroom has been called the best dance venue east of the Mississippi River. The Valencia has played host to a huge list of musical talent, Every major big band performed there, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Kay Kyser, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, and the list goes on. During an appearance by the Dorsey band, the Valencia stage was also graced by Buddy Rich, and by Dorsey’s young and upcoming vocalist Frank Sinatra. Big band era history fills every corner of this magnificent building, which also holds the distinction of being the first major ballroom to be air conditioned. The last major big band event at the Valencia was held on New Years Eve 2013, hosted by the Unforgettable Big Band and the York Social Dance Studio.

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, we are bringing back the fun and excitement of the big band years to the Valencia once again. This will be an ALL DAY EVENT, featuring SIX BIG BANDS, with the music kicking off at 9:30 AM, and rolling on until midnight. There will be swing dance demonstrations and workshops throughout the day, featuring the York Social Dance Studio, as well as the Hub City Swing Dance Club, and more. There will be swinging DJs covering the band breaks and stage change times, but mostly, there will be lots and lots of live big band music to appeal to music lovers and

dancers young and old.

We are pleased and honored to welcome the following big bands:

Reisterstown Jazz Ensemble Inc.; M&J Big Band; Gettysburg Big Band; Glass City Swing Band;  Powerhouse Big Band; who will join the Unforgettable Big Band to keep the joint jumping all day long, as each band will be presenting two swinging hours of great music.

Dance demonstrations and workshops will be ongoing throughout the day, presented by York Social Dance Studio, Hub City Lindy Hop, and more.

So, spread the word. Early bird tickets will go on sale on December 1, and we will roll with early bird pricing through the end of 2016. Join us as we welcome the Valencia back from the threat of extinction, and throw back York to the days when the music and the dancing set the tempo and the mood for the era.

Tickets will be sold as two sessions, as well as full day passes, and attendees will be provided with colored armbands at check in for identification. The first session runs from 9:00 AM and runs until 4:30 PM, and the second session begins at 4:30 PM and runs through midnight. Each session includes 3 big bands performing two hours each. The full day pass includes admission to both sessions.
